Goal 5 – Conduct research and provide research and data-driven decisions about technology-enhanced teaching and learning
Example 1: This artifact is a Google Doc, called Panther iPad Apps, which I created and shared with all of my staff members at West Milwaukee Intermediate School. Its purpose is for staff to be able to find and share information about apps that have been used successfully in the classroom. Information that can be found in this document includes the name of the app, description, and cost. It is organized by content area. When I initially shared it, it was almost blank except for a few examples that I gave. Now, it is starting to fill up with a lot of pertinent apps for different subject areas, all submitted by various teachers in the building. This artifact meets Goal 5 because it shows that I can provide resources for technology-enhanced teaching and learning to my staff members that have proven to be effective in my own classroom, and facilitate an environment where others can do the same. Example 2:
This artifact is a Prezi presentation that I created during the Critical Issues in Technology course at CUW. In this presentation, I included research about who the digital natives are, their common characteristics, and how to engage them in the classroom. The information that I gathered was from experts in the field, such as Marc Prensky. There are a few important messages of the presentation. First, teach technology adeptness to all students. Although they are known as digital natives, not all students have the same digital capabilities because they have not all had equal access to technology in academic settings and/or quality technology instruction. Also, integrate the technology that they love in order to engage them in the learning process, but teach them how to use it in an academic setting. This presentation was made for the teachers at my school, and I used it at a staff development meeting that was centered on Next Generation Learning. This artifact meets Goal 5 because it shows that I can conduct research and share my findings with others in my profession in order to promote meaningful, effective, and engaging technology use in the classroom. Example 3:
This artifact is a picture of me interacting with parents at a program at my school, called Monday Meet and Eat. The Meet and Eat that I attended was focused on technology. At this Meet and Eat, I spoke with parents about today’s students, known as digital natives. I showed them a Prezi presentation, which I had previously developed from research that I had done, that explained more about the characteristics of this group of students. I used it to discuss what we are doing as teachers to engage children in the classroom. This artifact meets Goal 5 because it shows that I am able to conduct research about students and their use of digital tools, and use it to inform parents so that they too can engage their children in meaningful learning activities at home.
